At the AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience, you join the biggest names in otolaryngology—head and neck surgery and thousands of colleagues from around the world for the latest advances in the specialty, new research findings, approaches, and treatment options to help you deliver excellent patient care. You are an indelible part of the Annual Meeting experience. Throughout our Academy’s history, international members and attendees have made our community not only more vibrant, but also helped keep us on the cutting-edge of the specialty. We look forward to welcoming you to the 121th AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience.

International Visiting Scholarships (IVS)

Every year, the AAO-HNSF offers a limited number of scholarships to junior academics from developing countries in order to attend the AAO-HNSF 2017 Annual Meeting & OTO Experience and participate in an academic observership at a U.S. otolaryngology department or institution (arranged independently by the candidate). The IVS is open to all candidates who meet the eligibility requirements.  Additional IVS opportunities exist with specific eligibility criteria to promote Academy participation from a given nationality, sex, or subspecialty.  The following "specialized" IVS grants are available in 2017:

  • The American Association of Otolaryngologists of Indian Heritage International Visiting Scholarship
    • Eligibility: Otolaryngologist—head and neck surgeons with Indian citizenship who reside in India.
  • Antonio De la Cruz, MD International Visiting Scholarship
    • Eligibility: Otolaryngologist—head and neck surgeons with citizenship of a country located in Latin America, and reside in said region.
  • Baxiram S. and Kankuben B. Gelot International Visiting Scholarship
    • Eligibility: International otolaryngologist—head and neck surgeon.
  • Dr. Dinesh and Pravina Mehta International Visiting Scholarship
    • Eligibility: Otolaryngologist—head and neck surgeons with Indian citizenship who reside in India.
  • Eiji Yanagisawa, MD International Visiting Scholarship
    • Eligibility: Meritorious international otolaryngologist (of a country other than the US or Canada)—head and neck surgeon.
  • IVS for French
    • Eligibility: Otolaryngologist—head and neck surgeons with French citizenship who reside in France. Sponsored by Nikhil J. Bhatt, MD.
  • IVS for Koreans
    • Eligibility: Otolaryngologist—head and neck surgeons with Korean citizenship who reside in Korea. Sponsored by Eugene N. Myers, MD, FRCS Edin (Hon).
  • IVS for Peruvians
    • Eligibility: Otolaryngologist—head and neck surgeons with Peruvian citizenship who reside in Peru. Sponsored by Nikhil J. Bhatt, MD.
  • IVS for Saudis
    • Eligibility: Otolaryngologist—head and neck surgeons with Saudi citizenship who reside in Saudi Arabia. Sponsored by Abdulrahman Hagr, MBBS FRCS(c).
  • Nancy L. Snyderman, MD, International Scholarship
    • Eligibility: Meritorious international female otolaryngologist.
  • Roy R. Casiano, MD International Visiting Scholarship
    • Eligibility: Otolaryngologist—head and neck surgeons with citizenship of a country located in Latin America

Each grant of US $2,000 will not fully cover the expenses of attending the AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience℠ and the observership. The grant includes a waiver for AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience℠ registration fees and a one-year trial membership of the AAO-HNS. The grantee will bear all other costs.

International Travel Grant

Are you a non-U.S. junior faculty member now studying in the U.S.A. or Canada? You may be eligible for one of five grants of up to $1,000 each to attend the AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience. These grants are not available to citizens of the U.S.A. or Canada or to foreign nationals studying outside the U.S.A. Each grant of US $1,000 will not fully cover the expenses of attending the AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience and the observership. The grant includes a waiver for AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience registration fees and a one-year trial membership of the AAO-HNS.

Entering the United States

Generally speaking, all non-U.S. attendees of the AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO Experience require a visa to enter the United States, most likely the B-1 Visa. Depending on your nationality, you may qualify for the U.S. Visa Waiver Program (VWP). It is your responsibility to stay up-to-date on rules and procedures. As a matter of policy, the AAO-HNS/F does not intervene in visa-related matters. Need an invitation letter for your visa application? Click here for more information.

Applying for a Visa

Step 1: Complete the online visa application and print the application form confirmation page to bring to your interview. You will also attach a photo.
Step 2: Schedule an appointment for your visa interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Wait times for interview appointments vary.
Step 3: Pay all necessary fees and gather requested documentation ahead of your interview.
Step 4: During your visa interview, a consular officer will determine whether you are qualified to receive a visa.

Money Matters

The currency of the United States is the U.S. dollar. You will likely be able to exchange foreign currencies at any bank, major airport, or hotel (for a fee). You may also withdraw cash from an Automated Teller Machine (ATM). Stay up to date on the exchange rate between the U.S. Dollar and the currency of your home country on websites like XE.com Tipping in the United States is widespread and is expected. International Guests of Honor

The AAO-HNSF International Guest of Honor program is a time-honored tradition. Every year, the AAO-HNS/F President recognizes approximately four countries or territories for their contributions to the otolaryngology specialty and global community. AAO-HNS Foundation’s International Advisory Board (IAB) General Assembly

The IAB General Assembly gathers international corresponding societies leadership, international members, peers, and stakeholders under one roof to discuss issues that matter most to our specialty and global community. Join us to take part in the conversation, and help recognize the recipients of our prestigious international awards, including the International Visiting Scholarship (IVS).

AAO-HNSF International Symposium

The AAO-HNSF International Symposium showcaseD cutting-edge content presented by international physicians. Providing a global perspective of popular topics in otolaryngology, this program will enlighten the entire community and offer high visibility to international presenters. As an additional component of the Annual Meeting program, the AAO-HNSF International Symposium will be promoted in conjunction with regular programming and as part of a new International scheduling track. It will not preclude attendees from participating in the other program sessions and activities, and previously planned sessions in Spanish will continue. AAO-HNSF International Reception

One of the flagship events of the Annual Meeting, the AAO-HNSF International Reception is a by-invitation-only reception honoring our international members, colleagues, and friends. If you are an international attendee you should receive your ticket upon registration in Chicago. Join Academy leadership and the rest of your peers for a night filled with dancing and authentic desserts from our 2017 International Guests of Honor: China, Mexico, France and South Korea!

AAO-HNSF Humanitarian Forum

Every year, the Academy and its Foundation support members working to make the world a better place. This session highlights some of the initiatives in which residents and other members have taken part. Panelists will also speak to the latest developments in the realm of global health and how you can leave your mark on this world.
